Parabens!!! Happy Birthday!!! Feliz Cumpleanos!!!!

We celebrated another milestone at our house this week and it was so much fun.  Our little girl turned five!!!! We have a tradition in our home that when you turn five, you get to have a date (one on one) with Mom or Dad.
Boo went with me to a local beauty school and had a fancy manicure done.  She knew exactly what colors she wanted on her nails, although she said she was too shy to ask for them. But when it came time, she talked all the way through the manicure and kept everyone entertained.   In the end, they used 12 colors of polish on her nails.

I'm so proud of her! She's in preschool and is learning her alphabet and is so anxious to learn how to read on her own.  We joke that she is earning her Masters Degree because of how independent she wants and asks to be. In fact, she insisted on helping me make her birthday cake!!!  Eat your heart out, Cake Boss!!!!

She also spotted a watercolor jumbo Princess coloring book while we were adventuring around town and insisted that it (among other things) come home with us to be one of her birthday gifts.   So it did.

We celebrated her birthday this year with a Garden Fairy party and she has had a thing for Tinkerbell since she was little. Her next gift was a T-shirt with a Tinkerbell design on it which you could color with the crayons included and iron it to make your work of art permanent.  She was excited to be able to work on it and wear it the next day!

Boo also loves to help me in the kitchen, especially when I'm making cookies or banana bread.  I told my family the other day about a cookie press that my family discovered when we moved in to my Great Grandmother's home after her death.
We couldn't figure out how to make it work properly and the cookies kept coming out funny.  Someone mentioned we needed Grandma to show us how... too bad she wasn't able to.   From that moment on, the cookie press worked wonderfully!!!
While I was shopping after I had shared my story, I found an inexpensive cookie press with cookie plates that are similar to the one Grandma had.  I brought it home, mostly for me, I'll admit. But I think Boo will enjoy using it too. She's already asked to make cookies with it and her list of recipients is growing quite large!

In Mexico, they have a tradition where once the birthday candles are blown out, the celebrant is encouraged to take a "mordida" (a bite of the cake). Their head is then shoved pushed into the cake.  Boo had seen this done at a recent party and asked specifically if we could do this at her party.  Daddy obliged.

The first attempt was gentle and she contentedly licked her lips covered in frosting.  Then Daddy decided he'd show her how they really did it in Mexico..........

That didn't go so well.

She did enjoy her birthday though and has been very contemplative.  She worries about new things everyday; today she was afraid of growing up and "getting babies."  Me too, mija. Me too.

We LOVE YOU, Miss BOO!!!!!

HAIR deux

Tonight went well. It wasn't as structured as I had hoped it would be, but a  lot of the girls had good questions and seemed to have fun while we played with hair and nails.  I hope they were able to take something from it tonight.

Some of the things I wanted to share with them we weren't able to get to for one reason or another. So I thought I would post some of them here and hope that they'll check out this page.  I hope to be able to include some fun (safe) websites they can use to help them in their search for fun styles and cuts/colors and maybe even show a few more styles.

This site is a good one for help determining what your individual face shape is which will allow you to find haircuts and styles that will help bring out your best features.  Nothing like a great cut to make you feel confident!
I aslo had a girl ask me what I thought she could do to really change up her look.  I gave a few suggestions, but mentioned a website where she could upload her own pic and change the look of her hair with celebrity hair styles, etc.   I gave her the wrong site address and the only one I can find that is still free is this one.  It isn't the best and it doesn't have too many styles or options, but at least she could play around a little.  If you're looking for more options and having access to celeb styles and you don't mind paying a membership fee for a few months, then here are a few more options. Try this one.  This is the whole look with makeup and is very fun to play with.  (Just spent a little more than an hour seeing what I should have done with my makeup for our last family photo!  DANG IT!) I should also mention, this COVERGIRL site doesn't charge anything.

We wanted to cover nail care too, but weren't able to get to it.  Instead they had fun with doing nail paints on eachother.   One of the best things you can do for your hands, especially during the winter months is MOISTURIZE.  Don't forget your cuticles.  For your hands in general you can use a lotion from bath and bodyworks for a lighter coverage. Or if you need more intensive help, consider something like Neutrogena, or Eucerin.  For your cuticles, you don't have to use a fancy oil like what I use while giving manicures.  You can even use olive/cooking oil  or make your own with one of these recipes, or try something like this.

These are just a few tips and I have plenty more. But for now, I'll leave those for another post!
Good luck and let me know if you have any questions or suggestions!

Family Fotos!!

Not too long ago, I took a fabulous photography class from a studio in Draper called FotoFly!  I enjoyed it so much I decided to see what they could do for my family pics.  What do you think?

If you have a Facebook account, you should check 'em out!

Hair! Hair! Everywhere, HAIR!!!!!

I've been asked to share with the young women in my ward some info on daily hair care and show them a  few ideas for styles, both for everyday/wear-to-school and a few simple up dos for the dances they attend at school during the year.
I can't seem to find Windows on my husband's laptop (which I am using right now) and so I have decided I would blog about it so I wouldn't waste all the time I've spent this evening looking at photos of potential hairstyles.    I figure I can pull this up while I'm presenting the info to them and browse the internet if needed.  (Hopefully I'll be able to connect to the internet!!!!!)  OH BOY!
So here goes:

We have a few girls that have ethnic hair.  I looked high and low for styles for them where they didn't have to change their current hair too much.... but there just wasn't a whole lot out there.  Since I know both girls have been known to sport both the longer and shorter versions, I figured I could share both kinds and give ideas for them to use whatever their "hair status" dictated.

Here are a few ideas for everyday hair:

Here are a few that could be worn for more special occasions:

We also have a few girls who could probably teach me a thing or two about hairstyling and they do a fabulous job!  So here are a few styles I thought they might be able put their own unique spin on:

Most of these could really be worn either for school or for more formal occasions.

This one is so versatile. I'll show a few versions of it so you know what I mean.

Side swept bangs
 Bed head with longer bangs

A bit more polished

But just because the front is polished doesn't mean you can't have fun with the back.

This is a classic!  I love this one and wish I had longer hair for it. It's called a chignon.

You can also play around with it!  Put it on the side, add braids and mess it up a bit, or add an accessory like a headband. You can even simply braid your hair and twist it into a chignon. Super hairdo for when you've not got a lot of time, or when you want to feel a little romantic.

What if you have shorter hair?

Just a few more

Perhaps in my next post I'll blog about how to properly take care of your hair on a daily basis....
